Gardening, Canning & Drinking
Posted on Thursday, August 23rd, 2012
This week absolutely blew by. Our garden, and all of its’ bounty is keeping me hopping. I don’t want any food from it to go to waste. If I’m not in the garden, keeping our fruits and vegetables picked, I’m inside in our kitchen, creating and cooking away.
Canning is a current obsessions. I am about jammed, syruped and sauced out. Blackberry Sage Sauce, Rhubarb Strawberry Jam, Blueberry Syrup, Peach Lavender Jam, Strawberry Vanilla Bean Jam and Rhubarb Chutney – done. Now I am in my pickling phase. Dilly Beans done, and coming up – Italian Giardiniera, and Spicy Carrot Pickles from a great canning book – Canning for a New Generation.
I’m also obsessed with this Manhattan Cocktail variation with an Italian twist. Here’s what I’ve been drinking:
Manhattan Cocktail with an Italian Twist
2 ounces rye
1/2 ounce sweet vermouth
1 ounce Cynar
Mix and shake with ice. Strain into a pretty glass, and garnish with some brandied cherries.
