Preserving for Future Cocktails

The squirrels and I have been busy. While they are burying all sorts of goodies in our garden, I’m bringing the herbal goodies inside to dry, and use later. Right now I’m drying lemon verbena, scented geranium and sage leaves. A while ago I made scented sugars with the lemon verbena and the scented geranium. This time around, I’m drying the leaves and going to store them in glass jars for future use. For me, it’s an experiment. I figure I have nothing to lose, as the leaves will turn to mush after the first freeze anyway. And maybe these preserved leaves will make flavorful simple syrups or other infusions further along during the winter months. So far, the lemon verbena dried beautifully, and still is very fragrant. The scented geranium leaves aren’t looking as lovely as they dry, but still have their alluring smell. I’ll keep you posted.
