Meet my latest crush – Cardamaro. Over the holidays, we popped into DeLaurenti’s here in Seattle’s Pike Place Market. I made a beeline to the section of their wine department with bitters, apertifs, and anything Italian and bitter in a bottle. The first thing to catch my eye was Cardamaro, probably because of the recognizable Amaro part. It is a wine based digestif flavored with cardoon, a relative of the artichoke, as well as blessed thistle. It jumped into my arms.
I have been enjoying it on its’ own – a little sweet, a little bitter and very interesting. What I’ve really been enjoying is substituting it for sweet vermouth in cocktails. Cardamaro with rye and some bitters is a fantastic Manhattan-like combo. I will be sad when my bottle of Cardamaro is empty. But fingers crossed, more will be waiting for me at DeLaurenti’s.
